This is “cover ready” artwork for a space opera cover. An empress mourns the passing of her father or mother and contemplates the responsibilities that are now hers: the safety and protection of so many worlds, so many people. Space opera is about culture and families, rather than technology, and the cultures are often preserved or derived from “old Earth.” Here I wanted to portray undertones from India in the character.
